Falcons bounce back with 89 points in win

With Cerritos forward Antares Vice scoring 33 points and guard Jennifer Decuir 26, the Falcons recorded an 89-73 win at Fullerton in women’s basketball Saturday.

The output was in marked contrast to Wednesday’s 65-59 loss to Cypress in the Falcons’ first home game of the season, when they missed many shots.

Falcons’ point guard Marci Wong said that the team “had a good practice” after that game.

“We didn’t give up, and we worked hard.

“Teamwork. That’s all it is. Talking (to each other) and keeping everyone in the game, and keeping up positive attitudes.”

Cerritos (4-2) led 39-38 at halftime, and ran out to a 51-44 lead, with Vice scoring four baskets.

The Hornets stayed close with three-point baskets from guards Kristen Hayman (three in the second half) and Michelle Litzinger (two in second half), and closed the Falcons’ lead to one at 72-71 with 4:37 remaining.

But the Falcons scored 15 unanswered points while the Hornets were unable to hit anymore outside shots.

Fullerton’s only remaining points came on a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining.

Litzinger led the Hornets with 20 points (six three-point baskets) and Kristen Hayman added 19 points with five three-pointers.

Vice made seven of nine shots in the second half, most of them from close range.

Decuir, who sank four three-point baskets, credited the Falcons with playing strong defense and a good all-around game, and “rebounded when we needed to.”

She added that the team was nervous in the Cypress game.

“We didn’t play our game.”

“We came out more focused and more intense (in this game).”

Vice said that the team hustled, by blocking out, rebounding and playing with “more intensity,” and that the “most important thing” was that the team “played together.”
