Women set new points record

The Cerritos College women’s basketball team set a new school record for most combined points for two games last week, as they defeated Los Angeles Harbor (107-30) and Compton (92-28). With the wins, the Falcons are now 18-5 overall and 2-0 in the South Coast Conference South Division. The 199 points eclipses the old mark of 194 points in consecutive wins over the Alumni (103-68) and Santa Monica (92-46) during the 1993-94 season. This year’s team also beat the three-game scoring record of 284 points, as they have scored 295 points in their last three games.

This week, the Falcons will close out their three-game homestand with a 5:30 p.m. contest against El Camino (6-15) on Wednesday. On Friday, the team will travel to Los Angeles Southwest for a 5:30 p.m. game.

Amazingly, in the team’s two huge wins last week, no player scored 20 points, with freshman forward Tiffany Amete (Bellflower) coming the closest. She netted 19 points in the win over Los Angeles Harbor, as six players scored in double-figures that night. Amete also added 10 rebounds, five steals and three assists in that game, while three players each scored 15 points. Sophomore center Eterei Wong (Artesia) came off the bench to make 5-of-9 shots and finished with 15 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, two steals and two blocked shots.

Cerritos opened the game by scoring the first 22 points, and held a 51-14 advantage at intermission. On the night, the Falcons shot 55%, while they forced 42 turnovers, recorded 30 steals and dished off 32 assists.

Sophomores Antares Vice (Bellflower / Cypress JC) and Chrystal Johnson (Bellflower / Snow, Utah JC) also added 15 points each and combined for 11 rebounds, seven steals and three assists. Sophomore guard Jennifer Decuir (St. Joseph / Humboldt State) finished with 13 points, five rebounds and three steals, with freshman guard Marci Wong (Mark Keppel) adding 10 points, nine assists and six steals.

It was almost the same against Compton, as Cerritos led 40-15 at the half. The Falcons shot 42% from the field, but netted 27-of-32 free throws (84%) for their best performance from the line all season. Vice led all scorers with 16 points and 16 rebounds, while Amete added 14 points, seven rebounds, three steals and two assists.

Johnson (13 points, eight rebounds), Decuir (10 points, eight assists) and Marci Wong (nine points, five steals, three assists) also played very well. The bench did another fantastic job, with Eterei Wong (eight points, six rebounds, four assists) leading a solid performance. Freshman guard Liz Rivera (Bell Gardens) had nine points after scoring four against LA Harbor.
