Cerritos breezes past competition

The Cerritos College menís basketball team continues to play better as the season progresses. With their two South Coast Conference South Division wins last week, they have secured themselves a share of first place as the first round comes to a close. The Falcons defeated El Camino (69-57) and Los Angeles Southwest (78-49) last week and will face cross-town rival Long Beach City this Wednesday in The Aviary at 7:30 p.m. The Vikings (13-12, 3-1) were undefeated through three divisional games until El Camino defeated them last Friday night. After their home game against LBCC, Cerritos will travel to Los Angeles Harbor on Friday for a 7:30 p.m. game. The Seahawks are the only team to defeat the Falcons in the last 14 games, as they posted a 55-52 win two weeks ago. The game against Long Beach City will mark the second time the two teams have faced each other this season. Back during the Irvine Valley Tournament, the Vikings posted a 74-68 overtime win. Against LA Southwest, the Falcons turned a 31-27 halftime lead into a 30-point advantage on the strength of sophomore guard Curtis Williamsí (Warren) outside shooting. For the second game in a row, Williams drained six three-pointers, and finished the contest with 22 points. The Cougars, the defending state champions, suffered their worst loss of the season, while the Falcons celebrated one of their most dominant performances of the year. After scoring just three points at the half, Williams came out firing, as he drained three straight treys to push the teamís lead to 15 points just five minutes into the second half. Complimenting the performance from Williams was sophomore guard DaJuan Wilson (Inglewood / Ventura JC). Wilson, who also struggled in the first half, came to life and registered 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while he also added seven assists, six rebounds and three steals. It was easily his best performance of the season, as the team looked to get a boost from the bench. The night started off on a bad foot. Sophomore guard/forward James Perkins (Gahr), the teamís leading scorer, went down with a high ankle sprain early in the game and did not return. That set the stage for Williams and Smith, while freshman guard Marcel Justin (Paramount) also took advantage of his opportunities. Justin hit all three of his three-pointers and scored 11 points on the night. The duo of sophomores Aaron Hamilton (Artesia) and Dwight Blair (Dominguez) each scored seven points and combined for seven rebounds and four assists, while freshman guard Geovanny Aispuro (Long Beach Jordan) dished off seven assists to go with his six points. In the win over El Camino, Williams made good on 6-of-12 three-pointers to finish with a season-high 25 points, while Perkins added 11 points, seven rebounds and five steals. The Warriors, a much-improved team over the last several years, were able to keep the game close, as the Falcons fought to the end. El Camino was able to stay in the game with their free throws, as they made 19, while Cerritos had only eight attempts, making four.
