Cerritos College has a new Associated Student body president and vice president, Sara Mayorga and James Towns.
“It was close but I was confident I would win,” Mayorga said.
The new president isn’t a newcomer to student government. Mayorga served as an ASCC senator, and vice president of the Feminist Majority Leadership Alliance in 2001, and chair of the student senator and ASCC vice president in 2001-02.
As ASCC vice president she was instrumental to the reinstatement of the tram, the extension of school library hours and implementation of safety phones across the campus.
“One of the reasons I wanted to run for president was because I feel that student issues need to be addressed,” Mayorga said.
I want to keep up the progress that Nassrin (the former ASCC president) and I started.”
The new vice president is also no stranger to campus politics. As the commissioner of new student orientation, Towns has helped to increase the student population by 7 percent. He is also a student peer counselor, internship coordinator and has helped to represent 24,000 student in the accreditation committee.
According to Mayorga, Towns is also a very hard worker.
“I noticed that he was supportive as the commissioner of new student orientation, he is also very reliable and has a likeable personality,” she said.
“She will make a good president because she has a lot of experience dealing with students,” he said.
Mikalel Sanchez, a pre medical major, helped the team on their campaign.
“She cares about the students and not the administration. She is not a politician” she said.
Mayorga’s and Towns agenda for fall 2002 and 2003 include:
