Make-up class applies smudge of creativity

Make-up class applies smudge of creativity

Our illustrious theatre department is on the verge of greatness! Once again our make-up class is aiming toward creative genius in its vision for the October, production of “One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest.”

“We are planning to enhance the image of the characters by making them look more insane.” said Susan Watanab,, instructor of the make-up class.

In the Cerritos College production of Mac Beth, the make-up class, headed by Watanabe, created gory costumes for the witches using foam latex body suits. “We made the witches look like they had decaying flesh with sores and bones protruding from their skin,” she explained.

“Often when creating a character, shadowing can make a feature recede or protrude. This is part of corrective make up.” One of the first assignments the students will undertake will be to make their faces long and narrow or short and wide!

David Carreiro, a cast member who played a witch in Mac Beth, describe the costumes as being very inspirational when it came to helping cast members getting into character.

“I thought it was great! We did the play in a post apocalyptic setting.”

“For my character, I got to wear the latex appliance piece which is a piece over my eye to make me look like I was deteriorating. We wore a body suit made of foam latex and they made it so that bones looked exposed. It felt nice! It really helped actors get into their characters.”

Jordan Alexander, another theater performer, described the best make-up job he had. “The best make up for me was when I performed in “Cabaret.” I had to wear fake eyelashes and my face was completely white with big red lips that they had to paint on me to fit the structure of my mouth. Costume-wise I’d have to say my favorite was Starmites where we dressed up like superheroes.”

The make up team is known for making magic. They can do just about anything they want in that class if they put their minds to it!” Alexander said.

Watanabe said that the best students are recommended for Knott’s Scary Farm and some students have even found work there.

Students can make everything from old folks make-up to horror masks. Many of the make-up class students feel that the class is a good way to learn how to make Halloween costumes.

Halloween is right around the corner folks. Check it out!
