Planning begins for women’s history month

“Women Pioneering the Future” is this year’s Women’s History Month theme.

Although Women’s History Month is not until March, the planning committee has already begun its preparations.

“A lot of people don’t realize the contribution women have made to society,” committee chair, Dora Lozano stated.

She went on to explain that the month’s activities will help to recognize these contributions as well as promote awareness about women’s issues in general.

This is the 17 year Cerritos College has hosted WHM activities.

There are activities everyday. “Last year we had over 40 events,” Lozano remarked.

Past years have brought presentations, guest panels, a breast cancer walk and various speakers. Two of last year’s speakers were Val Zavalo, of PBS, and Mavis Leno, an advocate for women in Afghanistan.

“Three hundred seventy five students showed up for Mavis Leno.” Lozano recalled. “That was amazing.”

Because the month’s activities are still in the planning stages, there are still opportunities for students to be involved

Clubs have the opportunity to host a presentation during a meeting.

Students may even join the WHM Planning Committee.

“It would be great to have students on the committee,” Lozano said.

“I just want students to get involved,” Lozano said, “however they want to help”

This year, the committee plans to pay special attention to the theme, “Women Pioneering the Future,” but still keep a broad enough scope to educate students of the many issues concerning women’s history.

“We try to focus on anything anyone wants to bring to the table.” Lozano explained.

The committee is looking forward to the various presentations done by faculty. Lozano stated that out of nearly every department someone is doing something to help. “Its amazing to see what comes out of the professors.”

One should also keep in mind that although WHM is about the issues surrounding women, members from both halves of the species are invited and encouraged to attend. “A lot of guys see WHM and think they can’t participate, but this is just about celebrating women.”

Many instructors offer extra credit for students who attend WHM activities.
