Get concerned!

Student concern day is rapidly approaching. On Monday the ASCC will set up a table from 10 a.m. to noon by the Social Science building. The whole point of student concern day is for the ASCC to get in touch with what students really need and want from the ASCC. Senators and other members of the student government will be out there with surveys, ready to listen to every student’s complaint and concern.

Some students might think it’s cheesy. Get involved with the campus? Who cares, we just want to get our general education classes out of the way and transfer out of this school!

Other people might think it’s a waste of time. Take a whole fifteen or sominutes talking to some student government officials when we could be using that time to get food from the student center or talking to our friends? We would rather talk to those people trying to sell us cell phones, than have to talk about politics.

People who think like this make valid points. They put time and thought into their complaints about why they shouldn’t go tell the ASCC their complaints. These people are such good complainers, they should go to student concern day and tell the ASCC what’s really wrong with this school. Everyone should.

Just like the people who didn’t vote have no right to complain that Bush is our president, students really have no right to complain about all the things that are wrong with the campus until they make an effort to change it.

So now that you’ve decided to go to table and complain, need help deciding what to talk about? Here are a few suggestions, straight from the Talon Marks editors.

How about suggesting that more vegetarian food is made available in the student center? Sure, we’ve got the veggie burger at Chicago Harv’s, bean and cheese burritos at Taco Bell and a salad bar in the Culinary Arts department, but five or so different choices of food isn’t a lot compared to the choices the meat-eating students have. Hey vegetarians, tell the ASCC that! They really can change things.

Or how about suggesting that a committee is formed to ask the city to build student housing. They’ll listen to us if we have enough organized people ready to work for it. Who is more organized and populated and versed in politics than the ASCC? Talk to those student senators about starting the committee.

Whatever your complaint is, go to the ASCC and tell them about it. They just might be able to help you out. And if they can’t help you, well at least you tried, so you can go complain to other people about how they couldn’t fix your problem.
