Rise Above

Rise Above is a collection of 24 tracks originally performed by Black Flag and is now being played by the band Mother Superior with many different people fronting the band.

The songs were taken from the huge Black Flag discography from the time they started out in 1978 until the break up in the late 80s.

The reason for this compilation was to help three kids who were framed for the murder of three younger boys. All money made from sales will go to helping Damien Echols off of death row, as well as Jason Baldwin and Jessie Misskelley out of their life terms in prison.

Vocalists on the record consist of Chuck D. (Public Enemy), Iggy Pop, Cedric Bixler (Mars Volta, At The Drive-In), Hank Williams III and Nick Oliveri (Queens Of The Stone Age). The line up of singers also includes original Black Flag members such as Keith Morris, who performed on the track “Nervous Breakdown,” which sounds like it was taken straight from the original 7′ e.p. released in ’78.

Henry Rollins, who played a big part in the release of this record and also fronted the band as the fourth singer, does four tracks he performed over the years. Last, Kira and Chuck Dukowski, both former Black Flag bassists, do their own versions of songs as well.

Overall the record is great and every singer does an amazing job. Since the proceeds go to a good cause that makes the record really worth buying.

For any Black Flag fan this is a must in your collection, and most people who are not familiar with the band, but familiar with the different singers, should enjoy it as well.
