Yeah, give em’ an Evian… while their in jail!

What if I walked into class today and said ‘Hi, I’m Sonia. And tomorrow, I’m going to go into your bank, and steal all your money. And then, I’m going to go to that trendy, expensive store in the mall and steal all the clothes that I can. After that, I’m going to run someone down with my car and take off!” No way! Unacceptable right? So if I’m saying it and it’s unacceptable, then why is it OK for celebrity’s to do it? And untimatly get away with it? Listen up all your future lawyers and judges at Cerritos College, because I’ve got a bone to pick. Let me say that I am happy that Winona Rider was convicted on Wednesday of grand theft and vandalism. Very happy in fact. But think about it long and hard. They devoted and entire trial to shopping. Shopping! Why couldn’t Winona just have said ‘I stole clothes. Yes, I did it!’ Everyone knew she did it, they had proof that she did it. But because she is a celebrity she was given the special treatment of an actual long term trial. You can bet your life that if a regular person in society would have done what she did, there would be no trial. No, actually, let me correct myself, there would be a trial, a 5 minute one that would be long enough for the judge to give the thief a jail sentance. Period. Not that I’m just picking on Winona. Believe me, I love Edward Scissorhands as much as the next person. Martha Stewart for example. She’s one of the richest women in America and she did insider trading. What did I think when I heard of this scandal? ‘Man not even Martha’s Raspberry Creme Brulee will get her out of this one.” But I haven’t seen Martha in an ugly orange jumpsuit yet. The fact is, O.J , Halle Berry, Dennis Rodman, and last but not least, Winona are all getting away with it all because of their titles. What’s sad is that their careers have seemed to benefit from this. In the end, it’s up to the public to decide. When we are the unlucky ones to sit on a jury for celebrity cases, do we look at them as we did onscreen, or do we visualize ourselves in that position and realize that it that were us, we’d be in jail?
