Eminem more than a rapper in ‘8 Mile’

Jimmy ( Eminem) and Alex ( Brittany Mruphy) have big dreams in 8 Mile.
Jimmy ( Eminem) and Alex ( Brittany Mruphy) have big dreams in 8 Mile.

Well, he pulled it off folks!

Eminem has proven that he can not only hang in the world of Hip-Hop with his lyrics, but he has now shown that he may have a place in Hollywood.

8 Mile premiered this Friday and it was worth the wait. 8 Mile broke box office records this weekend with superb performances from Eminem as well as Mekhi Phifer (Future), Kim Bassinger (Stephany) and Brittany Murphy (Alex).

In his debut, Eminem plays Jimmy Smith a.k.a. Bunny Rabbit, a white rapper who is struggling to survive in the slums of Detroit. He is attempting to overcome stage fright, which paralyzed him in his first appearance in the MC battles.

He has a fling with Brittany Murphy who plays Alex, a groupie who is intrigued by Rabbits skills. Rabbit eventually catches her having sex with one of his friends which leads to a major beef between he and a rival crew.

Basinger plays Stephany, his struggling mother who is trying to carry on a relationship with a man whom Rabbit went to school with. After breaking up with his girlfriend Rabbit is forced to go back to living with his mother and younger sister in their trailer home. On top of that, he is trying to overcome the poverty that is gripping him like a rough noose around his neck. He has to face the responsibility of being an older brother to his young sister who is otherwise neglected by his mother.

His job is paying him chump change and if things couldn’t get worse he finds himself wrestling with the prospect of his family being thrown out into the street.

In one scene he finds himself being jumped by the rival crew called “Free World.”

The catch him walking back to his trailer, taking his sister home. He doesn’t allow this to stop him. At this point he has to make a choice, get it together or let it all fall to pieces and lose whatever hope you have left. The movie is great because it is about overcoming the odds. It is inspirational. This is a story of the underdog! The underdog who emerges victorious after all the adversity that faces him. This is the classic American Hero hip-hop style!

There are a few steamy sex scenes throughout the movie and a lot of hip-hop anthems from groups like Mob Deep and soloists like Rakim.

The battles are rugged and the lyrics are crisp and precise just like the battles you see at “Jack the Rapper” contests and other hip-hop functions.

If you are a person who roots for the underdog or you are a hip-hop lover, an Eminem fan or you just love a good movie, this is a definite must see!
