I would like to address two crucial subjects concerning students with disabilities. One involves the parking lot where there is an extremly limited number of parking for the disabled.

My son is in a wheelchair and goes to Cerritos for speech and also adaptive PE. I have to park very far from where the classes are and usually can’t find a handicap parking space because either 1)There are very few of them or 2)Sometimes people obtain false parking placards to park in these few spaces- which makes parking for those with wheelchairs/disabilities extremely difficult.

Not to mention the meandering between cars and obstacles in the parking lot just to get to class. The designated parking is not situated in the best location nor is there adequate spaces allocated.

Secondly, one building we must go into for many of the disabled classes are in the two story building. Think about this…a fire, an earthquake or electrical outage- the elevators will not run. There are only stairs to go down to get safely out of the building.

How do you go down a flight of stairs in a wheelchair or if you have other physical impairments?? This makes absolutely no sense especially knowing you can’t pick up a wheelchair and carry the person down the stairs.

Many times the elevator has maintenance being done at the time of a class and we do not have an option of taking the stairs.

Rethinking the locality of these classes and adding more parking for the disabled would be to the advantage and betterment of all concerned.
