Cerritos College is home to several diverse, social, and academic clubs. Some are strictly for the purpose of providing aide to those who seek a specialized career.
One such club is the Pre-Med Club. Its members are dedicated to providing assistance to students who seek to advance in their medical studies.
Recently it was host to its very first Pre-med Conference. It featured speakers from U.C Irvine, UCLA and Kaplain.
The main subject discussed was the MCAT; the Medical College Admissions Test. Speakers also discussed the requirements for admission into a medical college.
“This is our first seminar. I will be here for one more year. I definitely plan to host another Pre-Med Conference next year,” Garza said.
“We started the club because we needed to boost our motivation. I am a little older than many of the other students so my motivation tends to go down. Especially at the end of the semester, you know, when you are struggling with classes and things are getting hard.”
Eleshea Watkins is the treasurer for the Pre-Med Club. She is a full time parent and a full time student.
“Being a parent is a 24 hour job. So I am studying throughout the day while I am on campus. For her the impact of [me following up on my education] is teaching her that school is very important. So she is very excited about going to school,” said Watkins.
She is one of many other students who wrestle with tight schedules and the responsibility of parenthood. On top of that she helps to plan meetings and seminars for the club.
These young women have done a great deal of work this semester and have put in a lot of effort into making sure the Pre-Med Club is successful.
