In a year where great movies have been popping up everywhere, it’s safe to say we can add one more to the top of that list. “Chicago” has blown it’s viewers and critics away and is already generating Oscar winning buzz. The play, originally written by Maurine Dallas Watkins, first premiered in New York on December 30 in 1926. It is about two media hungry murderesses who commit crimes against their husbands and lovers. Velma Kelly (Catherine Zeta Jones) and Roxie Hart (RenneZellweger) are the two women who are on trial for murder but unfortunately share the same extraordinary lawyer, Billy Flynn(Richard Gere). The fact that Flynn devotes all of his time to Hart doesn’t make Kelly too happy and results in a rivalry between the two lethal vixens. Despite the fantastic acting in this movie, the singing and choreography was what made it. “Cell Block Tango,” which featured six female inmates telling their sides of their stories, was impressive. And as rumor has it, all actors in this movie used their real voices for the songs. If this is true, it’s safe to say that Zellweger and Zeta Jones may have a career awaiting them in the music industry. I loved this movie. And as you may know, “Chicago” picked up three awards at the Golden Globes on Monday evening. They received the award for Best Motion Picture in a Comedy/ Musical, and Renne Zellweger and Richard Gere received Best Actor and Actress in a Comedy/Musical. Don’t be intimidated by musicals. They might just end up surprising you…and all that jazz.
