The year was 1995 the last time the Cerritos College Wrestling team took the title of State Champions.

Now seven years later the Falcons have brought home a victory.

The Falcons defeated Palomar128.5 to 126. in the finals at the South Coast Conference, which put this year’s team into the record books of Cerritos College History.

This is the third time in school history that the Cerritos wrestling team has won the title of State Champions.

Out of the nine wrestlers who participated this year only five of the wrestlers qualified to go to the State finals.

-Chris Lopez: A freshman, which had a 15-2 win in the finals.

-Damacio Page: A sophomore, who had a 9-7 win, which went into overtime.

-Gerry Barragain: A freshman, which had a loss of 5-4 due to an injury during the match.

-Marco Lara: A sophomore, who had an 8-2 win in the finals.

-Shannon Slack: A freshman, which had a 12-5 win in the finals.

Shannon Slack now only won in his weight division, but also received an individual title of the Most Valuable Wrestler of the State Championships.

It is obvious these athletes put plenty of hard work and dedication into every practice and game in order to make it to and win finals, but these men were not alone every minute of every practice and game.

The Falcons’ head coach Greg Gascon was named the State’s Coach of the Year.

The Cerritos College head coach was not the only to be praised for his time and dedication to the team.

The Cerritos College assistant coach was acknowledged by the State as well.

Brian Ransom, the Falcon’s assistant coach was named the Assistant Coach of the Year as well.
