Women’s tennis

The Cerritos College women’s tennis team has started off their season by winning, 8-1, in the Falcons first scrimmage on Friday against Victor Valley College.

This was the Falcons fist time playing Victor Valley in their league.

With six single matches, losing only the sixth match, Cerritos appeared to be the stronger team with more experience by dominating the match against Victor Valley.

To top the single matches the Falcons participated in three double matches, winning all three.

” We were the stronger team and none of the matches we faced were close,” said head coach Terri Button.

This is Button’s twelve year coaching at Cerritos College.

In the first two single matches that took place freshman Francine Sorianosos and freshman Jessica Button both won in their single matches.

” I know we will take the South Coast Conference, but Southern will be a challenge for us,” said tennis player, Francine Sorianosos.

Freshman Alica Huang and Sophomore Genie Schnakenburg also dominated in their matches pulling out two more wins for the Falcons.

Freshman Irma Farfan won here single match as well.

Unfortunately for sophomore Danielle Tolentino, she experienced her first loss of the season.

Moving on to the double matches Cerritos participated in Schankenburg and Farfan teamed up to win the first doubles match Cerritos went up against.

Tolentino made up for her loss by collaborating with Santos winning their double match.

Burd and Trespeses teamed up for the last match pulling out another win for the Falcons.

” Our team has good servers and we can keep the ball in court longer than others, but we need patience when we make a mistake,” said tennis player Jessica Button.

Filling the roster with 11 players, mostly freshmen, and two returning players Button feels she has a really strong team this year.

Although the team is built up of mostly freshmen this team has shone through their fist match that they can be competitive and they have the experience they need to win a match.

Button has chosen five who she feels are the top athletes who will lead the team, but is currently in the process of searching for her number six.

The top five are freshman Francine Sorianosos, freshman Jessica Button, freshman Alica Huang, sophomore and returnee Genie Schnakenburg, and freshman Irma Farfan.

As far as for the rest of the season goes Button feels the teams greatest challenge will be going up against El Camino.

Cerritos and El Camino are normally neck and neck every year.

” What it will come down to is who is the most competitive and who wants it the most,” said head coach Button.
