Senate members select party leadership

Five ASCC positions within the Senate were filled during the first ASCC Senate meeting of the semester last Wednesday.

The five people who filled those positions are: ? Senator Jorge Ramirez, president pro tempore? Senator Waleed Nueirat, majority leader? Senator Amisha Chandra, minority Leader? Senator Atila Bojon, sergeant at arms? Senator Natasha Sabouhi, Faculty-Senate liaison Nueirat said he’s ready to help out students.

In addition, Nueirat hoped that the new Senate members can learn from the experienced ones.

Sabouhi, who will follow in the footsteps of ASCC Vice President Alex Armendariz, is excited about her position, “because I like going to the Faculty Senate meetings.”

She said she learned hands on from being at the Faculty Senate meetings last year with Armendariz and that it is important for the ASCC Senate to know what is going on with the faculty.

Armedariz was Faculty-Senate liaison last year.

One of the things that she would like do during her tenure as Senate liaison is to conduct student surveys to get to know what important issues students are concerned about.

Bojoh expressed that she didn’t mind being elected as sergeant of arms because she is strong and will be able to handle the responsibility.

Chandra said that she was nervous as she ran for Senate, but that she too wanted to see what the ASCC was about.

During the campaign, Chandra said that she had advertised on MySpace and now that she is involved with Senate what she hopes to do is, “build relationships with those in the ASCC and though it is early in the semester, get to know the senators on a one-on-one basis.”

For the new senators, Holly Bogdanovich, director of student activities, gave an overview of the responsibility each senator had with the ASCC.

The most important thing for the senators, she explained, is “to be enrolled in at least five units, maintain a 2.0 grade point average and not receive an F during the semester.”

Afterward, Armendariz said that she sees a positive growth for those who are within the Senate and the five who were elected.

“They seem as if they want to help out the ASCC Senate,” he commented, “and from what I see the five that were elected, I believe, will do a good job.”
