Possible relocation of Falcon Square

Members of student government expressed concerns over a possible relocation of Falcon Square at the ASCC Cabinet meeting, Monday.

The Cerritos College Transformation Committee is looking into possibly moving the Falcon Square area to where the two swimming pools currently are within the next 10 years.

Though nothing is concrete, it is, however, a possibility.

ASCC President Joe Cobarrubio said that having Cabinet members’ input to the possibly of changes of Falcon Square was important and it was agreed that members will have an opportunity to express their concerns after the Cabinet meeting on Oct. 23.

Furthermore, Cobarrubio said that not only will members of the Cabinet have a chance to voice their concerns, but also members of the ASCC Senate and ASCC Court will as well.

Cabinet members got a head-start in doing so.

Riley Schnitz, commissioner of daytime activities, said that the relocation will not work.

“Falcon Square is a common place among the students,” she said, “but if it’s moved to where the pools are, the problem is that the area is too small and there will be a building on each side.”

She added that the one thing that should be kept is what is known as, “The Hill” of where the Amphitheater is.

Ashley Armendariz, commissioner of public relations, agreed that “The Hill” should be kept, but also brought up another pont.

She said that Hoe Down Days will no longer be held where they are usually held, “And I also did think about ‘What if student activities such as Club Information Day is gone?'”

Armendariz also thought that the pool area is too small.

As for Jason Macias, commissioner of information technology, he said that he recently did deep thinking and closed his eyes and tried to imagine what Falcon Square would look like, “but I, as a student, am used to the way it is.”

David Rodarte, commissioner of disabled students, added that the change of area wouldn’t be a positive one.

“It would be a negative outcome, because Falcon Square the way it is right now is a place where students interact,” he added, “so hopefully issues such as (the relocation) will be addressed.”
