ASCC to provide contact info for government representatives

Michael Barrita, commissioner of external affairs, hopes to distribute a list of phone numbers to students so they can contact their district representative, he said at the ASCC Cabinet meeting on Monday.

He said that after Tuesday’s elections he wants to give students information about where to contact their representative in order to give students an opportunity to express their concern with what the propositions meant and the changes each one would take effect in California.

At this point, Barrita explained that he is trying to figure out how to give out contact information and he added that he hoped that students utilized the Easy Voters guides that were in the library.

“I hope that (students) did read the propositions carefully,” He commented, “and heard the pros and cons of each initiative.”

Furthermore, Barrita said that he hoped that students would know how important it is to vote.

Barrita also emphasized the importance of voting because, as he said, “those who complain about not voting are the ones who don’t vote.”

ASCC President Joe Cobarrubio agreed.

During the Speech and Debate conference held over the weekend, Cobarrubio said that he had the opportunity to speak to other students from various colleges and said that there was a contest that students were concerned with the propositions involving the environment such as Proposition 1B that deals with traffic congestion and air pollution and Proposition 84 that deals with safer drinking water.
