Members from the Global History Club addressed the Board of Trustees during the Board meeting on Wednesday.

Club members informed the Board of an upcoming Global Consortium that will host Dr. Judea Pearl, UCLA researcher and father of slain journalist Daniel Pearl, on Nov. 28 at 7 p.m. in the Teleconference Center.

The moderator will be history instructor Dr. John Haas.

The program will be broadcasted live through the California Community College Satellite Television, online at www.cccsat.org and to the local community through cable television.

Matthew Pizzo, history major, spoke on behalf of the club in hopes of encouraging Board member to attending the event.

Afterward, Pizzo; Gustavo Limas, history major and vice president of the club; and Veronica Sandoval, history/anthropology major and co-vice president of the club all said that it is important for them to attend to hear the message Pearl had of bring both side of the east and west together on political issues.

“For someone like Dr. Pearl to come to Cerritos our hope is that we have stressed the importance of the work of Pearl in keeping the legacy of his son Daniel alive,” Pizzo said.

The younger Pearl, a reporter for the Wall Street Journal was kidnaped and held prisoner by Pakistan Islamic militants and later murdered in 2002.

After his death the family established The Daniel Pearl Foundation that instills Pearl’s hope to one day unite all sides in times of conflict. More information can be founded at www.danielpearl.org.

Sandoval said that students don’t understand the issue that lead to conflict and Pizzo added that the Global History Club currently has a established relations with At’quds University, an Islamic school in the city of Jerusalem that helps to understand the U.S. and Islamic relationship.

Sandoval said that in light of the tragic death of Pearl’s son, “he is taking his death and turning into a positive outcome which is, very good and I hope that students will see that when event happens.”

Limas said, “For me personal my hope was that the three of us came here and wowed them,” he added, “and get the Board members excited enough for them to attend.”

Cerritos College President Dr. Noelia Vela and Board Vice President Tom Jackson said they both had the opportunity to attend Worldwide Online Megaconference on Nov. 2 and said that they were impressed with the issues that Haas talked about and that it was worth attending the event featuring Pearl.

Vela said that the Global History Club was unique in the way it goes about informing students about issues “and the club’s strength is bring the connection to all sides within the world.”

Following the presentation ASCC President Joe Cobarrubio said that he doesn’t know much about the upcoming event, “but I hope I can attend the consortium and fit into my schedule.”

As for the presentation overall Cobarrubio said that, “it sounds interesting and if I do attend I look forward to learning more.”
