Students looking to get involved in student government will have the opportunity to do so. The ASCC currently has vacancies within its government in addition to looking for a replacement for former ASCC Vice President Alex Armendariz after he reached his limit of service last semester.
According to ASCC President Joe Cobarrubio there are currently two vacancies within Cabinet, 17 within Senate and two in Court.
Cobarrubio said there are three reasons for the vacancies: ? Students have transferred to other universities.? Students work or take other classes.? Students were not able to meet the requirement for a 2.0 grade point average or failed a class from the previous semester.
Cobarrubio said that he along with returning members will be recruiting during Club Information Day on Jan. 23 in hopes of finding students who are willing to be involved in student government.
“I will be out there in Falcon Square,” he said, “and hope to have a one-on-one conversation with students about what goes on in student government.
“Most of all, I look forward to meeting new faces within the ASCC,” he concluded.
Applications are available in the Student Activities office.
Students have different points of view about being involved in student government.
Brenda Quiroga, undecided major, said that although she wasn’t involved in student government while attending Bellflower High School, at least knowing what is going on within the campus is a good idea.
“I would be involved in student government if I didn’t have my classes to worry about,” she said.
Being a newcomer to Cerritos, Quiroga said that there are no issues that concern her at the moment.
However, Linda Badan, school counseling major, had a different point of view saying that whether someone is involved in student politics or involved in American politics that to her, it’s corrupted.
“That’s just the way I see it,” she added.
On the other hand, Badan said if she was involved in student government her primary concern would be the cost of tuition.
Cobarrubio said that issues as well as fresh ideas would be brought to the ASCC from students who are concerned and willing to be involved and it would help fill the voids left behind by those who left.
