She is the self-proclaimed “Biggest Midget in the Game.” However, this diminutive star from England has the title of “The Biggest Rap Star in the Game.”

On her debut album Public Warning (Def Jam) Lady Sovereign has the writing talent of rap star Eminem (Marshall Mathers).

At first listen, you will most likely ask, “Is she the next rap star?” and call into question the talent that producer Dr. Luke, who does all the instruments and programming for Sovereign, has as she raps all the lyrics she’s written.

Sovereign has the looks of former Spice Girl Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice) but from the first note, the overall album may sound weird or it may not make sense.

However, as the listener goes through the album, nobody, myself included, will be able to resist the rap of the 20-year old.

With her profound lyrics, she may as well give Eminem a run for his money.

Everyone at one time gave Eminem a hard time because he was a Detroit native who was thinking of making music in a genre that had no white rap star.

The same can be said for Sovereign. Yes, she is from England but she can rap!

From songs like the opening song “9 to 5” to the hit single, “Love Me or Hate Me”, Sovereign’s attitude is that she doesn’t care what you have to say.

In the lyrics to “Love Me or Hate Me” she raps, “Yeah, it’s officially the biggest midget of the game (I don’t know)/Make way for the S-O-V/Love me or hate me it’s still an obsession/Love me or hate me that is the question/If you love me then thank you.”

To fully appreciate the CD, one has to get past the explicit content throughout the album. Another thing that I like about the song, “Love Me or Hate Me” is that she is able to be honest about her musical talent, as in, “Love me or hate me, love me or hate/love me or hate me/So I can’t dance and I really can’t sing.”

You have to give her credit for being honest and more people should be able to be as honest as or more so than others.

Even if you think that you wouldn’t be able to get past the explicit lyrics of each song on the 13-track CD, the hooks of the choruses give Sovereign a lead way in the music that she has created.

Another rap star that makes an appearance is none other than Missy Elliott who remixes Sovereign’s song, “Love Me or Hate Me.”

Aside from Eminem, the late rapper and poet Tupac Shakur, had the ability to openly discuss his life; so has Sovereign.

But if you do want to think of her as the Spice Girl of rap music, you just go ahead and do that.

As evidenced by her lyrics, her attitude is that she could care less about what you have to say about her talent and career.

Do yourself a favor and read the thank you credits that she wrote.

She gives thanks to the fans that have supported her and that, she says, is a reflection of the fans’ support if you have purchased the album…so there she gave her own public warning whether you support her or not!
