Black History Month talent, fashion show in the works

In celebration of Black History Month, the Black Student Union is sponsoring the “Expressions through Black Art” talent and fashion show happening Feb. 25 at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Center.

The event is free of charge and open to the public. Guest speakers include Mandla Kayise, founder and CEO of New World Education, as well as actor and jazz pianist Howlett “Smitty” Smith.

Auditions for “Expressions through Black Art” are open to all students at Cerritos College. Singers, dancers, actors and poets and all other types of entertainers can try out Tuesday, Feb. 8 at LC-133 at noon.

Tremel Stewart, theater arts major and president of the BSU would like to bridge the student community at Cerritos College.

“We want to educate the black students on campus about the different opportunities available off campus and become more of a family to where we can share information and help each other out,” he said.

Stewart also welcomes all people from all walks of life to join the BSU.

“It’s open for everybody, there are no color lines.”

Tiffany Gaskin, creative writing major, is making history one of the primary focuses of the BSU.

“We really want to showcase our heritage and let people know where we came from and express all of our talent,” Gaskin said, “we want to show all of that to our college.”

Anna Pablo, history major, is working hard to publicize the talent show and make sure the BSU is stronger as a unit.

“I want the BSU to grow significantly, not only in numbers, but in what it does and how it does it and the depth of what it does. When I leave, I want the BSU to be known as a club that reaches out into the community. I want BSU to be something great,” she said.

Vendor booths, door prizes and a “Soul Train” line are just some of the activities everybody in attendance can enjoy and participate in.
