Women’s tennis gets off to a good start

The Cerritos College women’s tennis team had its first scrimmage on Jan. 27.

They played well, according to Coach Alvin Kim and Assistant Coach Jenny Tsai.

The squad played at Rio Hondo College and because both the men and women shares the same coaching staff, Tsai, who is in her first year with the program, took over coaching duties while the men’s squad played at Saddleback College at the same starting time.

“For their level, I think all the women did pretty well. Some were nervous, but it was their first scrimmage.” Tsai said of the scrimmage.

With no clear-cut stand out player to start the season, there was a knee injury to Brianna Thompson toward the end of her match did not help.

Thompson, Kim says has potential to be the team’s best player, was winning her match before going down with the injury.

The team, being freshmen to the program, have now gained its first tennis experience in college and now look to start the season on a good note.

With another scrimmage Feb. 1 and then its first real match of the season on Feb. 3 at Orange Coast College, the team has played well, according to Tsai.
