Women’s history essay contest winners announced

The winners for Women’s History Month Essay contest have been anounnced. The essay contest was about analyzing one woman in poverty.

The winners were picked by twelve judges, including faculty from five departments, a dean, two classified staff, and a student. Each judge submitted a list of five ranked finalists. Judges met to select the winner from those finalists.

The women in the essays ranged from history, fiction, myth, and legend. Out of 88 essays, only three earned could be picked.

There also was a cash prize ranging from $200 for first, $150 for second, and $100 for third place.

Laura Martin won first place for her essay, “Freedom.”

Alexander Vasquez received second place for his essay “Adaptation of the Old Woman Who Lived in a Shoe: Alternate Rendition of the Truth”, Katherine Ampaw took in third place for her essay,”The Poor and Crippled Woman”

Khalif Simley received honorable mention for her essay “All Hail the Queen!”.

Martin said that she entered the contest because it was an interesting theme. Martin also says that it was a wonderful experience and explains the she is encouraged to write more.

I have been involved with Talon Marks, the newspaper for Cerritos College, for five semesters. I have done mostly everything there is to do in Talon Marks; covering breaking news, page design, video production, podcast production, and photography. I like to read in my off time, mostly books about science fiction and horror. I also like to write fiction of my own, mostly poetry and short fiction. The career I have in mind would involve anything that has to do with creative writing and maybe writing some articles for newspapers here and there.
