Tapered wings enabled The Falcons to fly at a high speed and change direction rapidly to claw down the Beavers by winning the game 79-75, on Wednesday evening at Los Angeles Trade-Technical College.
The first half of the game the Falcons were neck and neck with the Beavers. Los Angeles Trade-Tech had great defense and a great deal of turn overs. There were many dunks from both teams and little to no fouls.
The last two seconds of the first half Cerritos Micah Winn, guard, made a three pointer that was jaw dropping making the score 39-37.
Cerritos Assistant Coach Lavell Owens said, “The first half was pretty good, I think we didn’t close out well on three’s, and they (Los Angeles Trade-Tech) got a couple of three point shots that’s why the game is so close it is now. But we gotta do a better job running them off the threes and make them take tougher shots.”
The second half of the game started a little sloppy by Cerritos defense, but the game escalated to be extremely intense making everyone sit at the edge of their seat.
The Falcons were down or ahead by two to three points throughout the last five minutes of the game, which made Cerritos Head Coach Russ May scratch his head and pace back and forth.
Both teams were calling plenty of time-outs to lose momentum and focus. With only a minute left in the game and the score being 77-75 Cerritos in the lead.
Jeff Gonzalez, forward for Cerritos, was fouled and made only one of his two free throws.
Trade-Tech tried their best to come back but lost the ball in the last ten seconds of the game and foul Josh Bell, Cerritos forward, who also made only one of his two free throws.
With two seconds, Los Angeles Trade-Tech called their final time out and were unable to make the last three pointer and get a foul.
The Falcons beat the Beavers 79-75 making it too close for comfort.
Jay Merriweather, forward, said “Tight games are never the best. But I mean, we fought and we came out on top and that’s all that matters.”
Merriweather also spoke highly of his teammates, “I feel like we went out there as a team and we executed. We did what we needed to do towards the end of the game and we fought and we just came out on top.”
May said, “I’m just very proud of our guys, showing some toughness at the end, making some key free throws, and defeat a very tough Trade-Tech team.”
May added, “We gave up way too many points and it wasn’t great, but thank God a couple guys came through for us at the end. Jay Merriweather with the big shot and Michah Winn with a big play in crunch time. So we were able to make a few more plays then they (Trade-Tech) did.”
