The Cosmetology Department was not going to have its annual show this year so Bryan Griffith, cosmetology major, decided to organize the whole show himself.
It started with favors and donations from friends, but then he found out that the Associated Students of Cerritos College had funds for the event so he got reimbursed for everything.
Cosmetology students along with Griffith organized and hosted their first annual Runway Showcase and student networking event on May 4 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Student Center.
Even though the runway show was put up by students, it was very professional.
Griffith said, “I networked, found models for students. I cut out magazine pictures and stapled them to the wall to show students what big runway shows look like.
“There were no rules; students had to come up with styles for hair, makeup and wardrobe. Now that it is over, I am pleasantly surprised we had a good turnout and the compliments are pouring in.”
The Student Center was a filled with the student stylists’ friends and family as well as some beauty salon owners.
There were free skin test offers on the spot to the show’s attendees, and then the students would recommend products that fit their skin.
Felicia Smith, cosmetology professor, said, “This was the best, show students did an excellent job.”
“I am hoping we can create a buzz around campus, student stylists are better than you may think,” said Griffith.
“We have had runway shows in the past years but this is the first time we have one like this. Before, it was a completion but this year it’s more about showing the students’ work without the competitive part of it,” said Monique Meza, Cerritos College alumni and guest show host.
The student stylists had to find models and decide whether they wanted to do a style in the past, present or future that was the theme of the runways show.
Each portion of the runway show (Past, present and future) was completed by having each student stylist say what inspired them to style their model.
Sam Becker, cosmetology major, said, “My inspiration was ’80s glam rock. I am really into music and I wanted to do a style like Siouxsie from the band Siouxsie and the Banshess.”
Jordan Carr, cosmetology major, said, “I did Vidal Sassoon and precision cutting, my inspiration was birds, feathers and high fashion couture.”
After the runway show ended, the students and models were on the stage so that guests could take pictures and the networking event started.
Students were able to meet and mingle with salon owners, product company representatives and give out their business cards in hopes of an employment opportunity for the future.
Stephanie Vasquez, cosmetology major, said, “It was fun, I would do it again, it boost up my self-esteem.”
