Falcon tracksters qualify for state championships

The Falcon track and field teams showed great speed Saturday in the finals of the Southern California Track and Field Championships at Mt. San Antonio College.

With their performances, many of the athletes qualified for the State Championships next week in Sacramento.

Cerritos finished fourth in the men’s team competition with 55 points, and the women’s team placed fifth with 57 points.

The top four finishers in the relays, 100- and 110-meter hurdles, 100-, 200-, 400- and 800-meters qualify for State, along with the fifth place finisher with the fastest time in the Southern or Northern California Championships.

The Falcons qualified for the State Championships in ten running events, including all four relay races.

The women’s 4×400-meter relay team finished second to West Los Angeles College with a time of 3:48.62, while the 4×100-meter relay team edged out San Diego Mesa at the finish line to win its race with a time of 47.49 seconds.

The men took third place in the 4×400-and 4×100-meter relays, behind Long Beach City and Mt. San Antonio.

The men’s 4×400-meter relay team finished with a time of 3:12.46.

The 4×100 team finished a close third in the 4×100 meter relay at 40.66 seconds.

That was .02 seconds behind Mt. SAC and .15 seconds behind Long Beach.

Takeela Beal qualified in the 100-meter high hurdles, finishing third in 15.25 seconds. She finished ninth in the 100 meter dash at 12.92 seconds.

June Martinez qualified with fifth place finishes in the women’s 200-meter (25.17) and 400-meter dash (57.09).

Orenda Talton also qualified in the 400 by finishing third with a time of 56.48 seconds.

Aisha Harris and Shakela Wilson qualified in the 800-meter run. Harris (2:16.90) finished third and Wilson (2:16.99) fourth, behind Kim Gildersleeve (2:15.55) and Sherron Rhetta (2:15.95) of West Los Angeles College.

Frantz Valbona (10.55) qualified with a fourth place finish in the 100-meter dash. Charles Allgood (10.72) finished seventh and Jason Rudison (11.26) ninth.

Jabari Fields of San Bernardino Valley won the event in 10.40 seconds.

Allgood qualified with a fifth place finish in the 200-meters at 21.27 seconds.

Darnell Anderson finished eighth in the 400-meter dash with a time of 49.08 seconds.

In the field events, the top six finishers in each event qualify for State.

Andrew Phillips qualified in the javelin throw, finishing third at 185’5.”

He will also compete in the Decathlon, having qualified by finishing first with 6,465 points Mar. 27 and 28.

Phillips and Patrick Enquist were tied with two others for the final two spots in the pole vault at 15.’

The tie was broken by the number of misses, and Enquist finished seventh and Phillips eighth.

Derrick Anderson finished second in the men’s long jump (24’4.5″), and eighth in the triple jump (47’7.25″).

In the women’s field events, Chrystle King advanced in the long jump, finishing sixth with a jump of 17’0.75.”

Ileen Lea’u qualified with a sixth place finish in the hammer throw at 130’8.”

Lilly Perez finished tenth in the javelin throw, with a toss of 95.’
