The chances of getting into a University in California just got a little better.

In a 15-14 vote, the regents of the University of California recently approved “Comprehensive Review,” a policy that will allow universities to judge applicants not just on their academic achievements, but also on their personal backgrounds and achievements.

“Comprehensive Review” will make the UC admissions process more like those of private universities, which take into account a student’s background, hardships and extracurricular activities when selecting their students.

The plan won’t alter the eligibility requirements for UC campuses, but it is likely to alter who attends the most selective campuses such as UC Berkley and UCLA.

Regent Tracy Davis, was excited about voting on the policy.

“The main reason I support it is that is says a lot about the values of the University. In embracing a purely academic framework we tell students that regardless of your background you still must achieve at this level.”

“‘Comprehensive Review’ embraces the value of students having different opportunities and different backgrounds,” she said

Tanya Hernandez, an English major at Cerritos College is hopeful that “Comprehensive Review” will increase her chances of getting into UCLA.

“I used to make straight A’s but my grades have dropped a little because I had a child and I had to start working.

“I Hope UCLA will look at my background and see that even though I don’t have a 4.0, I am a good student and a hard worker.”

Since the passage of Proposition 209, a measure that outlawed the use of affirmitve action on California universities in 1988, the number of minorities attending California universities has decresed.

Students are hoping this measure will increase diversity.
