With the passing of Ann Hanson disable students at Cerritos College will have to adjust to the changes that are and will come over time. The major change that is taking place right now is the tutoring. Disable students used to have their own room to go when needed tutoring, a trained expert in tutoring and explaining it well enough to understand. Now with the change of they’re tutoring system is disable students going to have the same tutoring as they did before? “Tutoring we doing as best we can, with the L.A.P. If they’re not receiving as much as support as they did, they’re right. We loss a member of the DSPS Ann Hanson, it’s not a question of money or tutors, is that Ann is not with us.”Robert Hughlett Director of Disabled Student Program and Services Some disable students are not happy with the changes, it bring more problems than solutions. Some of them have raise their voices to Associated Students of Cerritos College. “They have to get their tutoring with the regular students, which they need special needs.” Sara “We’re trying to make students aware of what might be in jeopardy, for we can step up to the plate and help out.” ASCC“No limits, are limited” Laura Senator “This is a project that we can work together.” Rosa

“ASCC are committed to students’ issues.” The question is brought up, are the tutors at the L.A.P. equipped with the necessary experience to deal with disable students?“We done that [trained the L.A.P. tutors] for years, we get tutors trained to work with disable students. Just like Shauna Mcelly,” Hughlett said.Shauna Mcelly, A tutor at the L.A.P. and also a disable students herself said “The instructor support center problem arose DSPS we have different services. We had something like a study hall study skills that was over seen by Ann. When she passed away, it was decided to move to the L.A.P. We ‘re trying to transition here, most of our students are doing okay, but there are some who need more. We’re hoping to train these tutor to learn to deal with the disable students. We want to have a series of in-services.A solution that ASCC brought up was having a time block for the disable students, just like the athletes of Cerritos College have there on Tuesdays and Thursdays. In regards to the solution if it’s a good idea or a bad one she said “It depends on how you see it, a time block if you say from 8-10 am disable students can come in and see the tutors, that means you close the L.A.P. just for them. We don’t want to do that, just because disable students have a disability, doesn’t mean they have to be excluded.” We had a movement change; it’s a hard thing for them” But also mentions to the disable students “Be patent with the translition, but don’t stay away from the services you need, this is going to take time. I am here Monday thru Thursday from 9-12:30 and 1:30-5p.m.”
