Living on a moment

“Whoa! I just woke up from a neurotic dream,” yells student Christopher Alverado while performing an Improv game called Freeze Tag. This is perhaps one of the best statements that could be used to describe the action that is Improv.

Well, prepare to get crazy because Cerritos’ Improv team has been preparing since December to put on a show that goes on this week only. The show will feature some new additions to the team, but also will feature some of the theatre departments veterans, like Alvarado. ” There are a few new people,” Alvarado says, “but it’s easy to do because we’ve all been trained under the same style. The style Kevin taught us.”

By this, he means Kevin Hoggard. Hoggard, a fine arts instructor on campus, is also known as “The Backbone,” of this group of people.

Hoggard has been teaching at Cerritos College since 1972 and has been teaching imrov for most of that time.

“I still haven’t figured out how to do all of it,” said Hoggard, “maybe one of these days I will,” he replies with a sly smile.

Some thing that’s for sure is that Hoggard “would never give this up.”

One of the cast members, alumni Jennifer Anderson, also praises Hoggard. “He’s wonderful! He’s like, the absolute best theatre teacher I’ve ever had,” Anderson said.

This means a lot considering Anderson has being doing Improv for six years.

So the big question is why would people get up on stage with no script and act on the spot?

Ronell Chavez, a film and television major, says its “all about letting go and feeling really comfortable on stage. You’re put in a situation where it’s like ‘get out of this.’ It’s awesome.”

The show is two hours long, and has an intermission. The show will be at the small stage/theatre studio. The show will play tonight, Thursday, and Friday night at 8 p.m. It will play Saturday at 8 and 10 p.m. and on Sunday at 7 p.m.
