Surviving the first year of college

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel

(KRT) Tips from three college freshmen:

1. Don’t feel pressured to be friends with the first people you see. Take your time and you will find the right people for friends.

2. Your roommate does not have to be your best friend or your mother.

3. You are not the only one who doesn’t know what to do with the rest of your life.

4. Dorm food is not as bad as you have heard. It’s worse.

5. Don’t fall into the two hours or 12 hours of sleep gang. Find a happy medium because time is a bitter enemy.

6. Try to remember names of people you meet. It will be difficult, but beneficial in the end.

7. Be ready for a big scheduling adjustment. A lot of people are used to only an hour of homework, but you are going to be doing a lot more.

8. Try to ask a lot of questions during orientation about different classes. Don’t just accept what is written on the description.

9. Be open to new groups and ideas. You are starting over again and you want to meet as many people as you can.

10. Find a club or a niche so that you don’t get lost in the crowd.

11. Have fun but remember to work hard, too. Don’t ever lose sight of either.

12. Visit the campus before you agree to attend.
