James Towns: A look into our new leader

James Towns: A look into our new leader

The new student body president James Towns who is in his second year at the college and whose major is English communications with a minor in business has never been involved in student government until the Spring of 2001.

When he undertook the title of Commissioner of Student Orientation in the executive office.

Under the presidency of Nassrin Bonyadloo, he assumed the position without prior experience, because he “[has] always had the urge to help those who were in need.”

And now gives her credit for having put him in his current position.

When asked of his inspirations he spoke of his aunt and grandmother who have taught him to fight for what he believes in and to never allow him to be treated unequally, but most importantly, “to never forget who wakes [him] up everyday.”

Towns acknowledges the hard work and dedication he needs to put forward to ensure the wellbeing of students but says that so far, there has not been any worse experience and that he has ” enjoyed and loved every minute of my time in office.

“I am not a politician and I have figured that out more and more as I go along in this political war, but fighting for the right for students to succeed by any means necessary has made it all worthwhile,” Towns said.

In the past there have been obstacles that have stopped ASCC’s productivity but Towns plans to be able to make students feel safer on campus. Some of the examples given were safety phones, a new tram, better lighting, and perhaps a higher visibility of security.

In his opinion student success is most important in this college. Without students a school is nothing and it is his belief that is a schools duty to provide all necessary means to ensure student’s success.

So far, “It’s been a wild emotional roller coaster ride, but I have enjoyed every second of it. This is a part of my life that I will always look back on and not be able to do anything but smile,” says Towns.

He speaks of this college as his life and knows that as joyous his time here is, he will become like any other president, “any former voice, any former student, just a memory carried off in the wind,” says Towns poetically.

Towns only hope for the future is to succeed, and gives the words of Booker T Washington, “Success is to be measured not so much by the position that one has reached in life, as by the obstacles he has overcome while trying to succeed.”
