Powerful Falcon offense locks up second place

Maintaining their lock on second place in the South Coast Conference South Division, the Cerritos College women’s basketball team placed a 92-64 win over Long Beach City Friday.

With another stellar offensive performance the falcons improve to 17-9 overall and 5-1 in divisional play. The Falcons who are avereging 77.7 points per game are currently one game behind Compton, and will get a chance to secure a tie when they host the Tartars on Friday.

Before their showdown for 1st place in their division in the conference with the Tartars, the Falcons will host the Los Angeles Harbor Seahawks on Wednesday. They shouldn’t overlook the Seahawks whom they’ve defeated 91-35 earlier in the season.

“We need to come out play hard” Shannah Aiono said reffering to what the team must do to prevent a let down game versus the Seahawks. Both games are scheduled to start at 5:30 p.m.

The Falcons shot 50% in both halves, while forcing 24 Long Beach City turnovers.

Leading the way for Cerritos was sophomore point guard Marci Wong, who scored 17 points while dishing out seven assists. “We played agressive throughout the game, we never gave up.”Wong said while contemplating the Falcon’s outstanding performance.

Wong converted 12-of-15 free throws on the night, with the majority of them coming in the first half when the Falcons posted a 46-31 lead.

Francis Ohaeri had 21 points and 13 rebounds to lead the Vikings.

Despite the strong performance by Wong, the team maintained their balanced attack with five different players scoring double-figures.

Freshman forward Lavonne Amete followed Wong by scoring 13 points and pulling down a team-high eight rebounds, while sophomore center Tiffany Amete and freshman forward Melissa Box each added 11 points and six rebounds.

Sophomore guard Nicole McCarthy, who converted both of her three-pointers, added 10 points and five assists, while the trio of Claudia Rodriguez, April Lenssen and Jameelah Flynn all finished with six points.
