Womens Track and Field

In what was considered to be a trial/practice meet, the Cerritos College women’s track and field participated in the South Coast Conference Relays on Friday.

The purpose of this meet was to see where all the runners are so when the conference matches start coaches will know who can do what.

“The meet was for us to see who is in shape and who is not,” coach Allen said.

The Falcons had to run distances that each runner doesn’t normally run. Either the runner runs above or below the distance each runner ran.

“At this meet everyone who ran, ran odd distances that they normally wouldn’t run,” coach Allen said.

The Falcons participated in a numerous amount of track and field events.

April Brown and Toshica Gaines ran the 300-meter, heat one.

Brown came in first with a time of 40.63 and Gaines who came in three after Brown was timed at 42.08.

Lorraine Weldon, Mellissa Fletcher and Deborah Bowser each ran in the 300 meter, heat two.

Weldon came in with a time of 43.71 with Fletcher right behind her scored a time of 44.58. Bowser ran in right after Fletcher with a time of 44.90.

In the 600 meter, heat one Cora Diggin, Shawanta Picard and Marlyssa Binns came in one right after each other.

Diggin ran in with a time of 1:49.39 while Picard came in next with a time of 1:5751. Binss who came in next had a timing of 1:58.99.

Jamie Beral came in with 1:53.22 in the 600 meter, heat two.

“I have been running since I was eight years old, so when I get on the track I know what I have to do,” runner Mellissa Dixon said.

Dixon and Merci Wedi both ran in the 1200-meter run.

Dixon who came in first ran a time of 4:01.18 and Wedi had a time of 4:15.32.

“I can push myself harder because I have more potential than I think I have,” runner Wedi said.

Julie Stewart and Mary Ann Boice came in consecutively after the 3000-meter.

Stewart who came in before Boice was time at 10:36.64 and Boice ran a time of 10:56.12.

In the field events the Falcons went on to participate in the hurdles, relays, shot put, discus and javelin.

Camiesh Diamond battled in the three of the field events: the javelin, the shot put and the discus.

In the javelin Diamond was 45’8″ and in the shot-put Diamond was 22′ 2.25, while finishing with the discus Diamond was 55’6.

Briget Rivera Boice also participated in the javelin.

Rivera had a distance of 101’8″ and Boice had a distance of 91’7″.

Mayra Gutierrez was the only Falcon to participate in the pole vault and scored an 8’6′.

In the 60 meter hurdles Rivera put out a 10.7 on the clock.

As for Gutierrez, Rivera and Sandy Ludezma who competed in the 300 meter hurdles came in with Ludezma with a time of 52.4, Gutierrez with a time of 54.0 and Rivera who came in with a time of 54.2.

“When a season starts our runners should be at 70 percent, but by the end of the season they will be at 100 percent. It’s still early in the season and we’re trying to get a feel where everyone is at, but overall I was pleased with them,” long distance coach John Goldman said.
