A look at Sex Day

Interested about sex? Ever wonder whether female circumcision was true or not? Pondered what rights homosexuals have?

On Thursday, students poured into LH1 where the highly advertised “Sex Day” seminar took place. Students were given free condoms at the door and information sheets about STD’s before taking their seats.

Dianne Pirtle, Professor of Sociology, was the first person to speak. She first spoke of an issue that many students don’t hear much about.

She spoke about Sexually Transmitted Disease’s (STD’s) and how to protect oneself when having sex, but she also took a plunge into Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) and the dangers of this practice as did Lauren Fernandez of FMLA.

FGM can be performed in three different ways:· Minor form: removal of the clitoris· Medium form: removal of the clitoris and removal of the inner and outer lips of labia· Extreme form: removal of the clitoris, removal of the inner and outer lips of the labia and for the woman’s vaginal opening to be sewed.

Women who undergo these procedures especially that of the extreme form, suffer from pain for the rest of their lives. Some women may bleed to death when being circumcised or when their husbands cut their vaginal opening wrong when trying to have intercourse.

She then proceeded to talk about sexual pleasures especially two in particular, sadomasochism vs. domination.

For those students who don’t know much about these practices, it’s easy. Sadomasochism is the pleasure of pain being inflicted upon themselves. People who practice this can be very dangerous.

As Professor Pirtle explains, “Sadomasochism can be more serious and more extreme than domination. As the person gets older, the more pain he or she wants to feel. This is a dangerous practice and can lead to death.”

Domination on the other hand is the practice of bondage; the pleasure of being tied up, light spanking or light whipping.

The second speaker was Viviana from GSA. She spoke of Gay Rights AB25. AB25 are domestic partnerships that give them rights.

A few of the rights that were talked about are:· The right to adopt a partner’s child· The right to administer for descendant’s estate· The right to receive unemployment benefits· The right to file disability for partner’s wrongful death suits· The right to make decisions for an incapacitated partner.

The last topic was a slide show talking about the dangers of STD’s. Each slide that was presented talked about what could happen if a person is not smart about having sex.

Pictures were also shown making certain areas of the audience cringe with disgust. After the seminar was over, more condoms were given out. Packages of condoms that had a red piece of paper on them were, to demostrate to students how common it is to contract an STD.

The seminar left student’s a bit disturbed while leaving some things to think about. So, you think you know everything about sex, huh?
