OPINION: The victim less law?

“No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex, be excluded from participation in, be denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any educational program or activity receiving Federal financial assistance.” – From the preamble to Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972

That does sound good. It reads like the constitution and stands like a tall flag waving in the air of a world of sexist pigs and male chauvinists. It resonates proudly leading the subjugated and oppressed to a land of equality and perfection were men and women alike can share in the prosperous fulfilling and rich life that an education through athletics can bring.

Man! That sounds even better than the actual law. How I wish that it were true and that the insidious law that is title nine was the righter of all wrongs in the world of athletic inequalities.

But a sad reality is that title nine has not achieved what it was conceived to do.

It is a good notion but like Billy beer and Disco Clothes, title nine is a 70’s notion that has run its course. It has reached its pinnacle of usefulness and is now on downward spiral that would make ENRON jealous.

It is now infringing on the very right it swears to protect because unless I am mistaken the wording dose not say women and minorities even if it was the intent. The law states that “No Persons” shall be denied the opportunity of activity in federally sponsored programs.

It comes down to something simple, “Robbing from the rich to give to the poor.”

But who will defend the rich? I mean rich doesn’t equal evil it just equals successful as in popular and in a position to cash in. The men’s games brings in the cash, the fans the sponsorship interest and the regale from the media.

They are the foundation for Saturdays filled with pigskin passion and Marches that fill athletic programs from sea to green sea in the fans and the dough.

Bottom line, title nine advocates demand equality for women’s program at the expense of successful mid major men’s programs that at one point also struggled with half empty arenas and half hearty interest.

It is hard to believe that title nine exists in world that frowns upon the so-called caveman notion that the man supports the woman and that the male is seen as the provider.

Title nine and its system to test programs for compliance needs immediate changing before another lack luster attempt at equality claims another male sport that has the possibility for profit and title opportunities for its school.

To conclude, when a women’s basketball game sells out… call me. When more that Sally Lesbian and Gary Gambler tune in to see women’s basketball soccer softball or another sport call me, email me the numbers and fax me the number of somewhere I can verify that because ESPN wont have it.

But, when a women’s program makes more money than it loses… wake up your dreaming and by the way lay off the midnight salami sandwiches.
