Bond measure allows for campus renovation

To build or not build? That is the question being decided at Wednesday’s Cerritos College Board of Trustees meeting.

Next on the list of proposed new facilities is a combination CIS Math Lab and Fine Arts building in which technology would meet the needs of both departments.

Artists and scientist alike would utilize new computers capable of running cutting edge software necessary for their fields.

According to instructional dean of fine arts, Connie Mayfield, a bond measure approved by district voters would fund the building.

Mayfield has been part of the facilities master plan taskforce committee and is directly involved with fine arts. She has been instrumental in achieving the buildings highest and best uses.

Ceramics professor Steven Portigal was seen speaking to building planners who were accompanied by a photographer. Portigal was explaining the functions of locations within the ceramics lab.

A large factor in the decision for the new buildings location on the C-8 lot was the need to keep the current building intact while making use of its specialty labs.

Photography, printmaking and ceramics all use large equipment, specifically for their field, and it would be unwise and detrimental to the programs if they were not able to offer them.

Although most students currently attending Cerritos will have graduated or transferred by 2015, the expected completion date, until then we will all feel the parking pinch construction brings.
