Women’s Soccer back to No. 1 in SCC

Women’s soccer continues its winning ways with a 4-0 victory on Friday versus Mt. San Antonio College.

Although the Falcons started out slow and played the first half with very little aggression, they came out the second half scoring early and often.

The team travels to Pasadena City College Tuesday, looking to improve the conference record to 8-1-0 and sustain the team’s first place lead in SCC play.

Freshman Ruby Leon, who scored the first goal for Cerritos early in that second half, explained, “In the first half, we were just being too patient and tried to capitalize on the Mt. SAC mistakes instead of attacking it.”

Attacking the Mt. SAC defense is exactly what the Falcons did in that second half, using their speed and keeping the opposition on its heels, pushing the ball up the field and creating scoring situations.

Cerritos continued that aggressive play the remainder of the game, getting opportunities to score time after time and freshman Morgan Thompson was thankful to fellow freshman Virdiana Ortega, whose missed goal attempt made an easy goal for Thompson.

“We just play so aggressively that if one of us misses a goal, we have the skills and teamwork to complete the play,” Thompson said.

The Falcons rightfully took their first place standing in SCC play against Mt. SAC by spreading the field and passing the ball to one another which kept the opposing team defensive minded and unable to create any scoring opportunities of its own.

Cerritos sharp passing and speed in particular, kept Mt. SAC at a disadvantage the entire second half as the Falcons won convincingly.

A pass from freshman Miranda Madrid to sophomore Nancy Gandarilla created an easy goal for Gandarilla, who also scored all three goals for the Falcons in the previous win versus East LA.

Ruby Leon also created a scoring situation in the closing minutes of the game when her kick was tipped in to the net by Mt. SAC player Brianna Joseph.

Freshman goalkeeper Laura Ropp earned a shutout in the victory.
