The Cerritos College student Senate met Wednesday, Oct. 1, to discuss the creation of student committees and have the committees focus on details of campus.
Student Body Vice-President Charles Caguioa felt the meeting went well and was happy to have the student committees organized.
“We definitely got a lot of things across that we needed to take care of,” he said. “We had a lot of our committees set up and are going to begin looking at particular details that has been happening in school.”
Various campus clubs presented appeals to the senate, discussing trips and conventions the different clubs would like to visit.
Clubs, such as the S.T.E.M. Club, Skeptics Society and the Bio Chem Club approached the senate to ask for money reimbursements in order to pay for the trips they (the clubs) are planning.
“We got to see a lot of different event presentations here in senate that are looking for funding,” Caguioa said. “If the events are really looking into the betterment of our campus, I hope they (the events) do get the funds that they need especially if they give great contribution to our school.”
Dean of Student Services Gilbert Contreras also made his voice heard at the meeting.
He believes that ASCC needs to be worked on, even when the school goes through low periods of activity such as the summer.
“It’s a challenge over the summer, the election process only elects the student trustee and the president and the vice president,” Contreras said. “So if there is any action that requires the student body to enact legislation, it’s only to those little that are around.
“There is no senate to approve and very little student feedback to make decisions.”
Contreras understands that bylaws allow the student president and vice president to take action; however, that is not how he wishes student government to operate.
“We want to be very transparent and have student input and have the ability to discuss issues that would affect students,” he said.
Student Body President Miles Aiello spoke at the meeting, as well.
According to President Aiello, Student Trustee Daniel Flores informed him of a informational meeting about the new CEO of the campus.
“Students can go and say what they want in their new CEO for the campus,” Aiello said.
He also mentioned to the senate that a task force will be formed to bring back old classes that are no longer in Cerritos’ systems.
“In 2008, classes were cut and they (the college) created a list of those classes,” Aiello said.
Dr. JoAnna Schilling has reopened that list and a task force will be established to look at what classes should be added back to the catalog, according to Aiello.
The next senate meeting will be Wednesday, Oct. 8, in room BK111 and 112 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.
