ASCC Cabinet discusses new business

The upcoming election for the General Obligation Bond (G.O. bond) Measure G was highly talked about at the Associated Students of Cerritos College cabinet meeting that took place on Monday, Sept. 17.

Vice President of Business Services David El Fattal was in attendance at the meeting to speak to the cabinet members about Measure G, as well as the money they will be soon voting on to assist in the campaign.

El Fattal passed out informational pages on both the history of the G.O. bond with Measure CC, that went into effect in 2004 and funded the construction projects that have took place over the last eight years, as well as information on the current Measure G.

The packet helped to inform new cabinet members on the history of Measure CC in order to help them to make an informed decision when voting on whether or not to take money out of the ASCC reserve that is going toward the campaign.

In the previous meeting that took place on Monday, Sept. 10, the cabinet members spoke about Constituiton Day and new school emails that are now avaible to students.

The next item on the agenda was a message from ASCC Vice President Aldo Lopez who encouraged the cabinet members to speak to friends about joining senate.

At the time of the Sept 10. meeting, only 19 applications had been submitted, however a number of 30 was recommended.

By Sept 17., 27 applications had been submitted.

A report made by Commissioner Karen Zapien was given, regarding the Operation Outreach Committee for which she serves as chair.

The committee was put together last year. The purpose of the committee is to inform the students individually on what is going on with the student government.

Zapien mentioned that the committee holds what is known as “Falcon Booths” at Falcon Square. It’s purpose is to serve as a “visible liaison between the student government and our students.

“We are physically out there talking to students,” she said.

She also added that during the semester, the committee is present at Falcon Square collecting surveys and hearing concerns regarding the student government as well as informing students about different resources offered to them on campus.

“Because as a student government representative, our goal is for them (the students) to have a good experience at Cerritos College as a student.”

The days of the committee’s booths are scheduled for Mondays, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., Tuesdays, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., and Wednesdays, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m.

The committee also had a Constitution Day themed booth on National Constitution Day, which was on Monday, Sept. 17.

She spoke about the importance of everyone getting involved in the event.

“We just want our student government to be as involved as they can because were all there for the same reason, for our students.”

According to ASCC President Lance Makinano, students have been wanting the @certtios.edu emails.

Students can now go to the library or student success center to obtain a student email with the @cerritos.edu.
