After weeks of facilitating debate, a new budget proposal for the 2014-2015 academic year has been passed.
A reoccurring issue in the preliminary stages of the budget proposal was cuts in the athletic department.
The original intentions were to cut $19,314 toward athletic footwear funding and establishing a process for which student-athletes must go through in order to obtain shoes.
The athletic department maintained their funding but a recommendation was made by Senator Athena Sanchez to have an application process for student athletes to obtain shoes.
Senator Abraham Venegas expressed his discontent of prolonging the debate of funding shoes, but also the satisfaction of finally reaching transparency with the athletic department.
“I believe all that talk, the special meetings, all that work that we put in, the senators putting in the time in special meetings, us having the decision to have that, I think [that] undermined senate.
“We wanted to have a process just be transparent I felt it undermined senate and all the discussions we had up to that point. I think that’s the way to go about it. Now there’s an application, now there’s a process, now there’s a paper trail, so now we have a record of that. It’s good,” Venegas said.
Game room faculty was also originally planned to be cut, but was approved for full-time employment.
Campus police was granted their request for five additional cadets to be employed on campus, preferably seeking Cerritos College students to fill those vacancies.
The homecoming float request to renew funding for the traditional building of the floats process was denied.
Vice-President Joe Nino explained the due process of the dissection of the newly implemented budget proposal and the extended time it took to pass it.
“We pulled items that senators wanted a good clarification on. We were very thorough, we got through everything, it did take awhile but we finally finished so it’s good. We changed a few things here and there,” Nino said.
After losing quorum, an excess of $54,00 was left to be allocated toward future expenditures and was tabled for the fall ASCC Senate.
