Women softball doubleheader against College of the Canyons ends in two losses

The Cerritos College softball team played a doubleheader, losing 4-0 and then 12-10 after 8 innings, against College of the Canyons at the Nancy Kelly Field on March 9.

A total of three players pitched for the Falcons, giving up 32 total hits and allowing 16 combined runs in the two games.

However, it was the Cougars’ pitcher Kimmie Lockhart who received the win.

Shortstop Brianna Quintana talks about preparing mentally for two games, saying, “I take it one game at a time and don’t think about the second one.”

In game one, both teams were scoreless after the first two innings.

In the the third inning, Cougars right fielder Andrea Brackpool hit a double to left field and made the run for Canyons.

Two innings later in the top of the fifth, Canyons’ infielder Ruby Herrera hit a double to right field, scoring center fielder Jenny Wunderlich and later, Nikki Haslock singled to right field scoring Herrera.

The Falcons trailed by three runs coming in to in the seventh inning, but the Cougars added one more with an RBI double to right field by catcher Amy Droege.

Falcons pitcher, Lily Cornejo, finished game one allowing four runs on 12 hits while the Cougars pitcher Kimmie Lockhart threw a shutout, not allowing any runs and only four hits.

In game two of the double-header, College of the Canyons scored first, in the opening inning, starting with a RBI single, hit by Lockhart.

Outfielder Adriana Correa scored in the same inning on a fielding error made by Falcons’ second basemen Alexxa Sanabria.

The Falcons took the lead from the Cougars shortly after in the bottom of the first inning scoring five runs.

Outfielder Amy Droege was responsible for all three runs scored by the Cougars in the second inning, starting with a two run RBI double, then stealing home for the third.

Falcons’ Sanabria scored an unearned run on a fielding error by Cougars’ first baseman Shay Romero in the same inning.

After a scoreless third inning, the Cougars added a run in the fourth to tie the score 6-6.

Then, College of the Canyons re-captured the lead in the fifth inning with three runs, and added one more in the sixth inning making the score 10-7.

During their last at-bat in the seventh inning and being down by three, the Falcons had only one more opportunity to extend the game or win it.

It was then, when right fielder Maiya Tallakson pinched hit for a teammate and hit a double to right field, scoring Quintana.

In the same inning, Tallakson, and Jackie Flores scored unearned runs after a throwing error by Cougars’ first baseman Shay Romero.

This would send the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth inning, College of the Canyons scored two runs with a RBI single by Brackpool, which turned out to be the game winner, and a RBI double by Herrera.

In the bottom half of the eighth inning, the Falcons could not recover the lead and ended the game with a groundout by Jackie Flores.

The Canyons remains undefeated 17-0 as the Falcons record drops to 16-6 overall.

The Cougars’ pitcher Alicia Paz gets the win after allowing five runs on six hits.

Falcons’ pitchers Lauren Castrellon, Shelby Blair and Lily Cornejo gave up a combined 12 runs on 20 hits.
