Season two of ‘On My Block’ is a must watch

Season two of “On My Block” covers the many problems young teens deal with in local communities making it more relatable than ever, from relationship problems, depression and gang violence, the writers did an amazing job covering all these topics.

The Netflix original series released its second season on March 29. The season one finale cliffhanger was covered in the first episode leaving the audience relieved their favorite gang of four were alive and healthy.

“On My Block” follows four young teens growing up in a small city named Freeridge. While trying to live their best life the teens deal with the high rate of gang violence and their own personal problems.

More suspense and drama is loaded into this new season; most of the drama is revolved around one of the main characters named Caesar played by actor, Diego Tinoco.

Caesar’s affiliation with the Santos gang leaves not only his life but his friend’s life in danger.

With the help of his friends and the new money that was found by his best friend Jamal played by actor, Brett Gray the friends plan a mission to make sure Caesar is not killed by the rival city gang, lack the Prophet$.

This is a coming-of-age drama that discusses serious issues but finds a way to also. be a comedy. It’s a great balance of both making this show relatable.

When it comes to portraying Latino and black families in any TV show a lot of writers do not seem to understand and use the typical stereotypes.

The difference between this show and all the others is the amazing connection the viewers feel with each character.

Anybody at home can relate to Ruby’s traditional Hispanic mother, Jamal’s unaware parents, Monse’s protective dad and Caesars older brother who chooses the gang life over family.

The most important messages portrayed throughout the season was forgiveness and friendship.

From Caesars best friend Ruby getting shot, his girlfriend Monse dealing with the issues about her mother who left and Jamal, who deals with anxiety, it is all balanced out by their promise to one another that no matter what happens they’ll always stick together.

The writers did an excellent job talking about serious topics while still making the show unique with its quirky characters.

Within each character, they all have their own unique family members that play small but essential characters that make up the lead characters viewers love.

“On My Block” has proved to be one of the new it shows that is here to stay. It is a drama-comedy worth binge watching.
